History
The Maulbronn Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey: its construction began in 1147. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, and the Bundesbank considers it the most perfectly preserved medieval monastic complex north of the Alps.
On the coin, the abbey church and its porch, the "Paradise," dated 1220, occupy the right side. On the left, the three-basin fountain under its Gothic pavilion, which has been the monastery's emblem since its reconstruction in 1878.
After the Reformation, Duke Christoph of Württemberg turned it into a Protestant school, which still exists today as an evangelical theological seminary. Johannes Kepler, Friedrich Hölderlin, and Hermann Hesse were students there.
