As early as 1962, the barn swallow was elected the national bird by the Estonian Society of Naturalists. The animal has further become a national symbol and a sign of peaceful resistance in Estonia during the "Singing Revolution." Its long, forked tail is characteristic. The animal is considered very trusting of humans and is also called the domestic swallow.
