The last sovereign of the absolute Monarchy, Louis XVI was a pious and reform-minded king whose reign was marked by profound economic crises. His opposition to the transformations of the French Revolution ultimately led to his downfall and execution in 1793.

Under a green mantle, lined with ermine, crowned and held by two crossed halberds, an imperial eagle, with a star above, and in its center the coat of arms of the Kingdom (Shield quartered into five sections: 1st, the Papal States; 2nd, Lombardy; 3rd, Venice; 4th, Este; and 5th, Piedmont, with an inescutcheon bearing the Iron Crown with points placed over all)
