OBVERSE

The highly symbolic design of the coin is by artist Fani Ivanka Taurino. It depicts Saint Francis of Assisi taming the Wolf of Gubbio, whose muzzle reaches out trustingly towards the saint's hand. The composition is completed by the cord of the Franciscan habit, recognizable by its three characteristic knots, as well as delicate branches and flowers. Around the motif are the inscriptions of the issuing state "SAN MARINO," the occasion "FRANCESCO D'ASSISI," and the commemorative dates "1226 – 2026." The mint mark "R" from the Rome Mint, the engraver's initials "F.Taurino," and the 12 stars of the European flag complete the design.
