The inner part of the coin depicts people embodying a new beginning towards a better future, standing in front of the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of German unity. The declaration WIR SIND EIN VOLK ("We are one people") – a collective expression of the will of German citizens representing the path forward towards German reunification.
