⁣⁢2 Euro coin Germany 2007, obverse: Schwerin Castle, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern⁤⁣

⁣⁢Why this coin⁤⁣

⁣⁢Summary in 60 seconds⁤⁣

Ce que c'est

A €2 commemorative coin issued by Germany on February 2, 2007: Schwerin Castle, for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the second coin in the German states series after the Holstentor in Lübeck. It has legal tender status throughout the Eurozone. This specimen is in UNC quality: it has never circulated.

Sa rareté

⁣⁢30,000,000 pieces for circulation: a very common coin, which will not gain value from its mintage. But the total hides an imbalance: according to zwei-euro.com, Berlin (A) and Hamburg (J) only struck about one million coins each, compared to nearly twelve million for Munich (D) and Stuttgart (F). BU and Proof mintages are not published.⁤⁣

Pour qui

For collectors of the German States series, tracing back to its early years; for those who want all five mint marks, including the two less common ones, A and J; and for those who love Schwerin, its castle on the water, which houses the state parliament.

Schwerin Castle, seen from the city: the water, the bridge, and the Burggarten park, suggested by rows of trees. The name MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN is below the castle, the mint mark above, and the initials HH of the artist Heinz Hoyer, from Berlin, at the bottom. On the crown: the twelve stars, the year 2007, and BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND.

⁣⁢History⁤⁣

Schwerin Castle stands on an island in Lake Schwerin, in the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A fortress is documented there as early as 973, and the Dukes, then the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, made it their residence.

A large part of the current building dates from 1845 to 1857: Grand Duke Frederick Francis II had it rebuilt according to the plans of Georg Adolph Demmler, with accents of a French Renaissance castle.

Since the end of 1990, it has housed the Landtag, the state parliament. The coin is the second in the German States series, issued on 2 February 2007.

⁣⁢Our Merchant's Opinion⁤⁣

At 30,000,000 coins, this piece will not gain value from its mintage, and it is not an investment. What makes it interesting for a collector is the mint mark: in 2007, the mintage was very uneven among the five mints, and A and J are found less often than D and F. The random coin gives one of the five; the lot reunites them.

A pitfall to be aware of: the mintage figure. Some listings only show the share from a single mint, not the total of 30,000,000. Check if the announced number covers the entire coin or just a single letter.

⁣⁢Weigh it: 8.50 g ± 0.10. Measure it: 25.75 mm ± 0.05 and 2.20 mm thick. Test the magnet: the ring is not attracted, the center is weakly attracted. Check the edge: the "2" and the two stars should be incused and evenly spaced; molded counterfeits leave a visible seam on the edge.⁤⁣

Handle the coin by its edge, over a cloth. Never clean it: cleaning removes the original luster and makes the collector's interest largely disappear. Store each mint letter in its own capsule, protected from humidity and away from any PVC.

7 ⁣⁢questions⁤⁣

⁣⁢Questions about the coin⁤⁣ 4

⁣⁢What is the value of the 2 euro Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2007 coin?⁤⁣

With 30,000,000 pieces, it will not gain value from its mintage. What matters to a collector is the condition, UNC, and the mint mark: A and J are the least common. This is not an investment.

⁣⁢What is the mintage of the 2 Euro Schwerin from 2007?⁤⁣

30,000,000 circulation strike pieces, minted in the five German mints (A, D, F, G, and J), but very unevenly. BU and Proof mintages are not published.

⁣⁢Which mint mark is the least common?⁤⁣

According to zwei-euro.com, Berlin (A) and Hamburg (J) each struck about one million coins, compared to nearly twelve million for Munich (D) and Stuttgart (F). Karlsruhe (G) falls between the two. The set of 5 mints includes them all.

⁣⁢How does it differ from more recent Länder coins?⁤⁣

On the 2007 coin, the crown bears the year of issue and BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND with the stars. On those from 2018 and 2021, the crown only bears the stars: the year of issue is in the design.

⁣⁢Questions about purchasing⁤⁣ 3

⁣⁢In what packaging is the coin delivered?⁤⁣

⁣⁢Can I return the coin?⁤⁣

Yes. 14-day returns.

⁣⁢Is this a good gift idea?⁤⁣

Yes. Modern, inexpensive, and it fits into the France series that you can complete at your own pace.
