History
Magdeburg Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Maurice and Saint Catherine, began to rise in 1209, two years after the fire of the preceding church. The ECB describes it as the first Gothic-style cathedral built on German soil.
The construction lasted nearly three centuries: the spires were not completed until 1520, and the tallest reaches 100.98 m. Otto the Great is buried there, alongside his wife Edith.
The cathedral is featured on the 2021 German €2 coin, the sixteenth in a series of seventeen launched in 2006: one for each of the sixteen federal states, plus one for the Bundesrat. The coin entered circulation on January 26, 2021.
