Between 2016 and 2018, Latvijas Banka launched a series of 2-Euro coins celebrating the historical regions of Latvia: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, and Zemgale. In 2025, the collection is enriched with Sēlija, thus completing the representation of the country's five founding regions.
The Richness of Latvia's Historical Regions
Each coin highlights the cultural and historical identity of the region it represents:
-
Vidzeme: rolling landscapes and medieval traditions.
-
Latgale: linguistic diversity and Russian influences.
-
Kurzeme: maritime and commercial role.
-
Zemgale: agricultural symbol and rural prosperity.
Sēlija, a Recognized Historical Region

Historically, Sēlija was a crossroads of Germanic, Baltic, Russian, and Polish influences. Integrated into the Duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale in the 16th century, it retains a unique regional identity.
