L'histoire
The first stone of the Dom was laid on August 15, 1248, under Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden, based on the plan by Master Gerhard. Construction halted for nearly three centuries, with the nave remaining unfinished, then resumed in the 19th century with the support of the Prussian state.
The cathedral was completed and celebrated on October 15, 1880. Its two towers reach approximately 157 meters (515 feet) in height, and they can be climbed. It houses the Shrine of the Magi, created between 1190 and 1225.
Listed by UNESCO in 1996, it became the subject of the North Rhine-Westphalia coin in 2011. Heinz Hoyer, an artist from Berlin, depicts the entire building and highlights its south portal.
