L'histoire
On July 11, 1852, King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia created the corps of public safety guards, by law n° 1404: this is the origin of the Italian police. The current Polizia di Stato was established in 1981, when law 121 made it a civilian body.
To mark the institution's 170th anniversary, Italy minted a 2-Euro commemorative coin in 2022, with a Proof version reserved for collectors. Its unique feature is the strike: the background is diamond-polished to a mirror finish, while the relief is sandblasted and remains matte.
This Proof coin has a mintage of only 10,000 pieces and comes in a presentation box.
