⁣⁢2 euro coin Germany 2006, obverse: the Holstentor of Lübeck and the inscription Schleswig-Holstein⁤⁣

⁣⁢Why this coin⁤⁣

⁣⁢Summary in 60 seconds⁤⁣

Ce que c'est

A 2-Euro commemorative coin issued by Germany on February 3, 2006: the Holstentor in Lübeck, for Schleswig-Holstein. It is the first coin in the German States series, which comprises seventeen coins from 2006 to 2022. It has legal tender status throughout the Eurozone. This example is in UNC quality: it has never been circulated.

Sa rareté

⁣⁢30,000,000 pieces for circulation, struck at the five German mints. This is a very common coin, and starting the series does not make it rarer: the other sixteen coins on the Bundesbank list all show the same mintage. BU and Proof mintages are not included in their data, so we are not displaying any.⁤⁣

Pour qui

For those starting their collection of German states with the first of seventeen coins; for those who want a simple starting point, without a rare mint mark to search for; and for enthusiasts of Lübeck and the city gate.

⁣⁢Obverse⁤⁣

The Holstentor, the gate of Lübeck, occupies the center of the coin, with the name of the state SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN below it. To the left of the image is the mint mark; to the right, the initials HH of artist Heinz Hoyer, from Berlin, who would also design the 2007 coin. On the ring: the twelve European stars, the year 2006, and BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND.

⁣⁢History⁤⁣

The Holstentor is one of the gates of the old city of Lübeck, a Hanseatic city. Its construction began in 1464 and was completed in 1478. The gate now houses a museum dedicated to the history of Lübeck.

The 2006 coin opens the series of German states: one Land per year, in the order of the Bundesrat presidency. Schleswig-Holstein is the first of the sixteen Länder to be featured on a 2-euro coin.

The series comprises seventeen coins, one per Land plus one for the Bundesrat in 2019, and concludes with Thuringia in 2022. A second series began in 2023.

⁣⁢Our Merchant's Opinion⁤⁣

With a mintage of 30,000,000, this coin will not gain value and is not an investment. Being the first in the series changes nothing: the following sixteen coins have the same mintage. To start, the right purchase is an Uncirculated (UNC) example, intact, which sets the condition to expect for the other sixteen.

A pitfall to be aware of: the common side. This coin is dated 2006, before the 2007 change: its reverse features the old map, the one of the Union before 2004, and all subsequent ones bear the new map. This is not a defect, it's a characteristic of the first coin.

⁣⁢Weigh it: 8.50 g ± 0.10. Measure it: 25.75 mm ± 0.05 and 2.20 mm thick. Test the magnet: the ring is not attracted, the center is weakly attracted. Check the edge: the "2" and the two stars should be incused and evenly spaced; molded counterfeits leave a visible seam on the edge.⁤⁣

Le détail

Handle the coin by its edge, over a cloth. Never clean it: cleaning removes the original luster and loses most of its collectible interest. For a series, store each coin in its own capsule, protected from humidity and away from any PVC.

7 ⁣⁢questions⁤⁣

⁣⁢Questions about the coin⁤⁣ 4

⁣⁢What is the value of the 2 euro Schleswig-Holstein 2006 coin?⁤⁣

With a mintage of 30,000,000, it will not gain value: it's the first coin in the series, not the rarest. A Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) example, intact, is worth the same as a common 2-Euro commemorative coin. This is not an investment.

⁣⁢What is the mintage of the 2-euro Schleswig-Holstein from 2006?⁤⁣

30,000,000 coins for circulation, struck at the five German mints (A, D, F, G, and J). BU and Proof mintages are not published.

⁣⁢Which coin should I start with for the Länder series?⁤⁣

By this one: Schleswig-Holstein is the first coin, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2007 and Hamburg in 2008. The series continues to Thuringia in 2022, and a second series began in 2023.

⁣⁢Who designed the coin?⁤⁣

Heinz Hoyer, from Berlin, whose initials HH appear to the right of the design. The common side is by Luc Luycx, as with all 2-Euro coins.

⁣⁢Questions about purchasing⁤⁣ 3

⁣⁢In what packaging is the coin delivered?⁤⁣

In a numismatic sleeve, with individual protection, in a neutral package without mention of the contents.

⁣⁢Can I return the coin?⁤⁣

Yes. 14-day returns.

⁣⁢Is this a good gift idea?⁤⁣

Yes. Modern, inexpensive, and it fits into the France series that you can complete at your own pace.
