History
The Paulskirche was built in Frankfurt between 1789 and 1833, based on an oval plan. In May 1848, the first freely elected German National Assembly met there; it was dissolved in May 1849. Hence its name, the cradle of German democracy.
Bombings destroyed the church in March 1944. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1948, for the centenary of the Frankfurt Parliament. On the coin, the roof is not depicted: this detail refers to this reconstruction, without erasing the destruction.
Where other German states show a castle or a cathedral, the coin from Hesse depicts a parliamentary site. It was released on January 30, 2015: it is the tenth in the series launched in 2006, in order of the Bundesrat presidencies.
