⁣⁢Official Coincard of the 2 euro Vatican 2014 coin, fall of the Berlin Wall: blue sleeve bearing coat of arms and the date MMXIV - 2014⁤⁣

⁣⁢Why this coin⁤⁣

⁣⁢Summary in 60 seconds⁤⁣

Ce que c'est

The 2-euro commemorative coin issued by the Vatican City State in October 2014 for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It has legal tender status throughout the euro area. This specimen is in BU quality, in its official coincard: it has never circulated.

Sa rareté

⁣⁢94,000 BU coincards, out of a total volume of 103,000 coins announced in the Official Journal of the European Union. In coincard format, this is a collector's mintage, worth noting without calling it a rarity. The market for modern commemoratives remains narrow, and nothing guarantees an increase in value.⁤⁣

Pour qui

For Vatican collectors, whose 2-Euro commemorative coins are sold in coincards with small mintages. For Cold War history enthusiasts. For those completing their 2014 2-Euro coins, the year of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall.

In the foreground, bricks from the partially collapsed Berlin Wall, bearing the inscription XXV ANNIVERSARIO DEL CROLLO DEL MURO DI BERLINO 1989 2014 (“25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall”). In the center, an olive branch grows between the bricks and a piece of barbed wire; in the background, the Brandenburg Gate. At the top, CITTÀ DEL VATICANO; at the bottom, the mint mark R. No effigy or papal coat of arms, which is unusual for the Vatican. Design: Gabriella Titotto; engraving: Claudia Momoni.

⁣⁢History⁤⁣

The Berlin Wall is erected in August 1961 and divides the city for 28 years. On November 9, 1989, after weeks of unrest, the East German government announces that visits to the West are permitted; East Berliners climb the wall and cross it.

For the event's 25th anniversary, the Vatican chooses a design without a pope: an olive branch between bricks and barbed wire, in front of the Brandenburg Gate. Panorama Numismatico notes the absence of Pope Francis' effigy and coat of arms, which is unusual for Vatican City.

The coin is struck in Rome by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, according to Gabriella Titotto, engraved by Claudia Momoni. The Official Journal announces 103,000 coins for October 2014; 94,000 BU coincards were minted.

⁣⁢Our Merchant's Opinion⁤⁣

Two figures circulate for this coin. The Official Journal of the European Union announces 103,000 coins; 94,000 is the mintage for the BU coincards. Other catalogs print different totals: use the first for the volume, the second for this coincard. The discrepancy between the two is not explained by the sources we consulted.

At 94,000 coincards, this is a collector's mintage, not a rare coin: the Vatican 2-Euro market remains small, and nothing guarantees an increase. Keep the coin in its coincard: removed from its holder, it loses most of its appeal.

⁣⁢Weigh it: 8.50 g ± 0.10. Measure it: 25.75 mm ± 0.05 and 2.20 mm thick. Test the magnet: the ring is not attracted, the center is weakly attracted. Check the edge: the "2" and the two stars should be incused and evenly spaced; molded counterfeits leave a visible seam on the edge.⁤⁣

7 ⁣⁢questions⁤⁣

⁣⁢Questions about the coin⁤⁣ 4

⁣⁢What is the value of the 2 euro coin commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall from the Vatican?⁤⁣

Its value lies in its coincard and its mintage: 94,000 BU coincards, out of 103,000 coins in total. An intact coincard is what Vatican collectors look for. The market for modern commemoratives remains narrow, and nothing guarantees an increase.

⁣⁢What is the mintage of the 2 Euro Vatican 2014 coin?⁤⁣

103,000 coins in total according to the Official Journal of the European Union, including 94,000 BU coincards. The mintage for the common quality and the Proof quality are not published.

⁣⁢Do all catalogs list the same mintage?⁤⁣

No. The Official Journal states 103,000 coins; other catalogs print different totals. We use 103,000 for the volume and 94,000 for the BU coincards.

⁣⁢Can this coin be spent?⁤⁣

Yes, it has legal tender status throughout the Eurozone. But what a collector pays for is the intact coincard: once the coin is removed from its holder, that interest disappears.

⁣⁢Questions about purchasing⁤⁣ 3

⁣⁢In what packaging is the coin delivered?⁤⁣

In its official coincard, with individual protection. The packaging is neutral: nothing indicates its contents.

⁣⁢Can I return the coin?⁤⁣

Yes. 14-day returns.

⁣⁢Is this a good gift idea?⁤⁣

Yes. Modern, inexpensive, and it fits into the France series that you can complete at your own pace.
