History
Schwerin Castle stands on an island in Lake Schwerin, in the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A fortress is documented there as early as 973, and the Dukes, then the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, made it their residence.
A large part of the current building dates from 1845 to 1857: Grand Duke Frederick Francis II had it rebuilt according to the plans of Georg Adolph Demmler, with accents of a French Renaissance castle.
Since the end of 1990, it has housed the Landtag, the state parliament. The coin is the second in the German States series, issued on 2 February 2007.
