On the obverse, a design by artist-engraver Tobias Winnen commemorating the one thousand two hundred and seventy-five years since the birth of Charlemagne, depicting the seal of the Emperor and King of the Franks; in the upper part, the legend KARL DER GROßE; in the lower part, the capital letter D for Deutschland (Germany), the mint mark, the year 2023, and the birth and death years of Charlemagne, 748 and 814; on the outer ring, the twelve emblematic five-pointed European stars pointing upwards.
