L'histoire
Portugal is not among the countries that signed the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Its accession to the European Union dates from January 1, 1986, and its entry into the Eurozone from January 1, 1999.
In 2007, it nevertheless struck its version of the 50th-anniversary coin, with the inscription TRATADO DE ROMA 50 ANOS. The Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, in Lisbon, signs it with its initials, INCM, to the right of the design.
Portugal presided over the Council of the European Union from July to December 2007 and struck a second commemorative coin for the occasion, featuring the cork oak, issued in July. The two coins share the same year, the same mint, and the same edge: only the obverse distinguishes them.
