This authentic coin, made of 917‰ solid silver, was issued for a very short period between 1794 and 1793! It is one of the last royal coins struck before the French Revolution of 1789 and one of the few coins that bear witness to this revolution, featuring the monarch's profile on its obverse and the symbols of the Republic on its reverse. It was issued until the sovereign's death in 1793.

⁣⁢This majestic écu represents the last king of France from the Ancien Régime period. Louis XVI was King of France and Navarre from 1774 to 1791, and then became King of the French from 1791 to 1792. He was also the last king to reside at the Palace of Versailles before igniting a war between absolute monarchies and revolutionaries. He was then indicted for treason on charges of not respecting his constitutional role, secretly maneuvering against the Revolution, and attempting to flee France in June 1791. The Assembly decided to try the king. He was sentenced to death and guillotined on January 21, 1793.⁤⁣
