Portugal 2009 - 2 Euro Commemorative Coin - Economic and Monetary Union
OBVERSE
The coin shows a primitive design combined with the euro symbol (€). It conveys the idea that the single currency and, by extension, the Economic and Monetary Union are the culmination of the long history of trade and economic integration in Europe.
The coin is issued by each Eurozone country and bears its name and the legend "EMU 1999-2009" in the country's language(s).
The design was chosen from five preliminary designs selected by citizens and residents of the European Union, who voted online. It is the work of George Stamatopoulos, engraver at the Hellenic Mint.
REVERSE
A map showing the fifteen member states of the European Union united is depicted on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars of the European Union.
