The obverse of the 2-euro coin issued for the 450th anniversary of Caravaggio's birth depicts the Repentant Magdalene, taken from the work of the same name housed in the prestigious Galleria Doria Pamphiljà in Rome. Having renounced her previous frivolous life, the young woman opens herself to divine grace with her hands delicately placed on her knees and the jewels left on the ground next to the ointment jar. The single ray of light that crosses the canvas anticipates the dramatic lighting of the painter's mature phase, which would influence all subsequent European painting.
