⁣⁢The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) arose from tensions between the thirteen American colonies and Great Britain after the Seven Years' War. Indebted, the British Crown imposed new taxes on the colonies without granting them political representation, which caused strong discontent ("No taxation without representation").⁤⁣

⁣⁢The conflict turned military in 1775 with the battles of Lexington and Concord. The colonies then organized against the United Kingdom. On July 4, 1776, they declared their independence with the United States Declaration of Independence. Led by George Washington, the American army received significant aid from France, notably thanks to the Marquis de Lafayette.⁤⁣

⁣⁢The decisive victory occurred at the Battle of Yorktown, leading to the Treaty of Paris, which officially recognized the independence of the United States.⁤⁣

OBVERSE
The Marquis de La Fayette (1757–1834) was a French politician and officer who joined the Americans at the age of 20 to provide aid during the War of Independence. He formed a friendship and bond of trust with General George Washington and played a decisive role in the war, notably with the victory at Yorktown in 1781.
He occupies the foreground of the obverse of this coin, his gaze turned to the left. He stands before the French and American flags represented in heraldic colors: horizontal lines for red, smooth surface for white, and vertical lines for blue. The inscription "USA 250" is found within the stripes of the American flag, and his surname below his portrait.
REVERSE
George Washington (1732 – 1799), the first President of the United States, is considered one of the Founding Fathers of the country. He played a crucial role as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the War of Independence between 1775 and 1783, and helped establish the foundations of the young American republic. Washington maintained very good relations with France, particularly through his relationship with the Marquis de La Fayette, to such an extent that he was granted honorary citizenship in 1792.
He is depicted on the reverse of this coin, looking to the right. He also stands before the American and French flags rendered in heraldic colors. The face value is on the right, his name below his portrait, and the date of U.S. independence along with the year of issue are on the left.
