⁣⁢Volodymyr the Great was Grand Prince of Kyiv (980-1015). During his reign, the rise of Kievan Rus' as a solid community and great power began, and all Eastern Slavic lands were united under Kyiv's rule. In 988-989, Rus' was Christianized at his initiative.⁤⁣

⁣⁢At the end of the 10th century, the wall system of the Kiev Detynets (citadel) contained several gates. One gate was for passage to Podil, another – towards Pechersk, another was for passage towards Saint Sophia Cathedral.⁤⁣
