Between 2016 and 2018, Latvijas Banka launched a series of 2 euro coins celebrating Latvia's historical regions: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, and Zemgale. In 2025, the collection expands with Sēlija, thus completing the representation of the country's five founding regions.

Sēlija, a recognized historical region
Located in southeastern Latvia, Sēlija has been officially recognized as a historical region since 2021. Its landscapes of hills, forests, and rivers, its folk traditions, and its silver deer coat of arms make it a strong symbol of Latvian identity.
Historically, Sēlija was a crossroads of Germanic, Baltic, Russian, and Polish influences. Integrated into the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia in the 16th century, it retains a unique regional identity.

The coin will be put into circulation on 9 October 2025, with 413,000 copies:
