⁣⁢Sēlija joins the series of Latvian commemorative 2 euro coins⁤⁣

⁣⁢Between 2016 and 2018, Latvijas Banka launched a series of 2 euro coins celebrating Latvia's historical regions: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, and Zemgale. In 2025, the collection expands with Sēlija, thus completing the representation of the country's five founding regions.⁤⁣

The richness of Latvia's historical regions

Each coin highlights the cultural and historical identity of the region it represents:

  • ⁣⁢Vidzeme: rolling landscapes and medieval traditions.⁤⁣

  • ⁣⁢Latgale: linguistic diversity and Russian influences.⁤⁣

  • ⁣⁢Kurzeme: maritime and commercial role.⁤⁣

  • ⁣⁢Zemgale: symbol of agriculture and rural prosperity.⁤⁣

Sēlija, a recognized historical region

Located in southeastern Latvia, Sēlija has been officially recognized as a historical region since 2021. Its landscapes of hills, forests, and rivers, its folk traditions, and its silver deer coat of arms make it a strong symbol of Latvian identity.

Historically, Sēlija was a crossroads of Germanic, Baltic, Russian, and Polish influences. Integrated into the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia in the 16th century, it retains a unique regional identity.

The 2 euro Sēlija coin

⁣⁢The coin will be put into circulation on 9 October 2025, with 413,000 copies:⁤⁣

  • 400,000 for circulation in rolls of 25 coins

  • 7 000 in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality in a presentation folder

  • 6 000 in BU euro set

⁣⁢Created by Laimonis Šēnbergs, the coin features the coat of arms of Sēlija with the inscription LATVIJA and the date 2025, minted in Lithuania by UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla.⁤⁣
