"United in diversity" is the motto of the European Union. It characterizes how Europeans have come together, by creating the European Union, to work for peace and prosperity, thereby enriching themselves with the continent's diverse cultures, traditions, and languages.

The dove is the symbol of peace. On the coin's obverse, the dove is depicted in a graphic and modern style. It holds an olive branch whose branches have been replaced by the 12 stars of the European flag, a symbol of peace in Europe. The 28 countries of the European Union are represented by their respective ISO codes. The Europa Star Program logo is present below the dove.
