Since 1962, the barn swallow has been elected the national bird by the Estonian Society of Naturalists. The bird has also become a national symbol and a sign of peaceful resistance in Estonia during the "Singing Revolution." Its long, forked tail is characteristic. The bird is considered very trusting of humans and is also called the house martin.
