A Bit of History
Napoleon III, whose real name was Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, was the last monarch to reign over France. He came to power as President of the Second Republic in 1848, then proclaimed himself Emperor in 1852. His reign was marked by significant urban transformations in Paris, such as the city's renovation by Prefect Haussmann, as well as economic and social reforms. Napoleon III is also known for his ambitious foreign policy, particularly his support for national liberation movements in Italy. However, his empire collapsed following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, which led to his capture and the proclamation of the Third French Republic.
