Francis I ordered its construction in 1519, on property belonging to the Counts of Blois adjacent to the game-rich forest of Chambord.

A castle intended for hunting, the king only spent 72 days there during his 32-year reign. Louis XIV had it completed by Mansart in 1685. Like a fortress, it features an enclosure, a square keep with 4 corner towers housing the fabulous double-helix staircase, undoubtedly inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, 2 wings, a terrace, and a lantern tower. With its 156 m facade, 426 rooms, 77 staircases, 282 fireplaces, 800 sculpted capitals, and 300 salamanders, the emblem of Francis I, this white tuffeau palace is a masterpiece of the Renaissance.

Adorned with French formal gardens by Louis XV, it was gifted in 1821 to Duke Henri of Artois. Purchased by the French State in 1930, the Chambord estate was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981.
