The face value "1 1/2 €", the mint marks, and the motto "LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ" are in the center of the coin. Below is the mint year "2002", "RF" the name of the issuing state of the French Republic, and the famous fairy tale opening "ONCE UPON A TIME...".

Alice in Wonderland is a children's fairy tale created by Lewis Carroll in 1865. The name of the tale is inscribed at the very top of the coin "ALICE IN WONDERLAND". Below it stand the main characters of the tale: Alice (the colorized part), the Queen of Hearts against a background of a colorized playing card, the caterpillar, and the rabbit.
