OBVERSE

The obverse features an engraving of the iconic French fashion designer, Yves Saint-Laurent, who drew inspiration for his creations from the streets of Paris. Saint-Laurent was the first living couturier to have his work exhibited in a museum. The engraving bears Saint-Laurent's signature and an image of his first fashion show in 1962; a show that would completely change the course of fashion history.

REVERSE

The reverse features Saint-Laurent's talisman heart and a collage taken from his New Year's greeting cards. This symbol of love is very important to the House of Yves Saint Laurent, the design being based on a heart-shaped brooch which has featured in every collection by the House since the first Haute Couture show in 1962. The reverse carries the inscription LIBERTÉ EGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ, embodying the ideals of the French Revolution and reflecting the passionate desire of the French for freedom and equality.
