The world-renowned Palace of Versailles is one of Europe's grandest palaces and the pinnacle of palatial architecture on the continent. From the 17th to the 19th century, it served as a model for many palaces in various countries.

UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

Originally built as a hunting lodge for King Louis XIII (1601-1643), the building—now over half a kilometer long—underwent several phases of expansion and transformation starting in 1661 under Louis XIV, the Sun King, directed by different architects. In 1979, the Palace of Versailles was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

The center of France

From the mid-17th century to the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, the imposing Baroque palace served as the primary residence for the Kings of France and was the country's political and cultural center. During this period, the palace housed not only the monarch but also several thousand court members who lived there permanently.

Open to visitors

The palace is now fully accessible to visitors. The central body, with its lavish state rooms and chambers, can still be visited in its original condition. The large side wings, meanwhile, have housed the Museum of the History of France since the 19th century, dedicated to all of France's glories.
