A survivor of the Auschwitz camps, she became one of the most important figures in European integration. She was the first elected President of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1982. She fought for the decriminalization of abortion, and the law bearing her name was passed in 1975. She was admitted to the Académie française in 2008.⁤⁣
