⁣⁢The coin shows a primitive drawing combined with the euro symbol (€). It conveys the idea that the single currency and, by extension, the Economic and Monetary Union are the culmination of Europe's long history of trade and economic integration.⁤⁣

⁣⁢The coin is issued by each euro area country and bears its name and the legend "EMU 1999-2009" in the country's language(s).⁤⁣

⁣⁢The graphic design was chosen from five designs shortlisted by citizens and residents of the European Union, who voted online. It is the work of George Stamatopoulos, an engraver at the Bank of Greece Mint.⁤⁣
