⁣⁢In antiquity, Macedon was a proud and powerful kingdom. And it was the homeland of Alexander the Great, one of history's most famous rulers. The foundations for Alexander's victories had already been laid by his father: King Philip II (382-336 BC) reorganized the Macedonian army and was able to extend his power to Greece after his triumph at the Battle of Chaeronea in 337 BC. In 40 BC, he took the head of the League of Corinth, with whose help he planned a major campaign against the Persians. However, this did not happen, as King Philip II was assassinated a year later.⁤⁣

Rumors circulated that it was a conspiracy involving his ex-wife Olympias and their son Alexander. Ironically, it was he who implemented his father's conquest plans and thus completed his life's work.

⁣⁢On the obverse of this tetradrachm, we don't see the ruler himself, but the head of the father of the gods, Zeus, wearing a laurel wreath. The depiction on the reverse – a young man riding a horse with a palm branch – tells of an important success of his reign: the victory of a Macedonian rider at the Olympic Games. This silver coin is therefore considered one of the earliest Olympic coins in history!⁤⁣
