This collectible 5 euro coin is the fourth issue in the five-coin series "Earth's Climate Zones" and is dedicated to the subpolar zone.

The series began in 2017 and will run until 2021, with one issue published per year. The design for the 2020 edition, created by artist Natalie Tekampe, depicts a landscape typical of the subpolar zone. The image shows an artificial tundra with subarctic mountain ranges in the background. In the center of the design, a reindeer can be seen, which is the most well-known representative of this climate zone. The motif is surrounded by a translucent, turquoise polymer ring and the inscription " SUBPOLAR ZONE ". The color of the polymer ring differs each year according to the theme and depends on the climatic conditions of each climate zone.

 

The reverse, which is the same for all coins in the series, was designed by artist Stefanie Radtke from Leipzig. It features the federal eagle and the inscriptions "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND," the face value, and the year 2020. The twelve stars of Europe and the mint mark "A, D, F, G, and/or J" complete the design. The plain edge of the coin contains the inscription: "KLIMAZONEN DER ERDE."
