On the obverse, a design by artist engraver Tobias Winnen commemorates the twelve hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of Charlemagne's birth, depicting the seal of the emperor and king of the Franks; in the upper part, the legend KARL DER GROßE; in the lower part, the capital letter D for Deutschland (Germany), the mint mark, the year 2023, and Charlemagne's birth and death years, 748 and 814; on the ring, the twelve emblematic five-pointed European stars pointing upwards.
