OBVERSE
Louis I reigned over the Kingdom of Holland (the name adopted by the Netherlands during Napoleon I's reign) from June 5, 1806, to July 1, 1810. He was the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and the father of Napoleon III. Torn between his duty as King of the Netherlands and his obligations as a French prince, his relationship with Napoleon deteriorated to the point that he was forced to abdicate in 1810, leading to the annexation of the Kingdom of Holland into the French Empire. The banknote features a map of the Kingdom of Holland from that era and Louis Bonaparte, based on a portrait painted by Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) in 1809.
