On the occasion of the Schleswig-Holstein presidency of the Bundesrat, Germany issued its first commemorative 2 euro coin on the federal states in 2006. The inner part of the coin depicts the "Holstentor," the emblematic gate of the city of Lübeck. At the bottom of the inner part and below the gate, the words SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN appear. The initials of the engraver Heinz Hoyer, HH, are to the right of the design. One of the letters A (Berlin), D (Munich), F (Stuttgart), G (Karlsruhe), or J (Hamburg) appears to the left of the design as a mint mark.

Twelve stars form a semicircle on the upper part of the outer ring, interrupted by the year 2006 at the top of the coin. The words BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND form a semicircle on the lower part of the outer ring. Edge engraving: EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT and the federal eagle.
