1610: A major date in French history!

Henry IV had reigned over France for over 20 years. Raised Protestant but converted to Catholicism to ascend the throne, he ended the Wars of Religion in France in 1598 with the Edict of Nantes, which granted Protestants freedom of worship. He also concluded conflicts against Spain and Savoy in 1598 and 1601, and enabled the economic recovery of his kingdom with his Superintendent of Finances, Sully. However, a portion of the Catholic population in France remained hostile to him due to his Protestant origins.

Starting in 1609, tensions flared again between France and the Habsburgs. Henry IV supported Protestant German princes in a conflict against the Catholic Holy Roman Empire. He was preparing to lead a military expedition that risked reigniting a war with Spain, which displeased the Pope and French subjects. As he was about to depart, he officially had his wife, Marie de' Medici, crowned at Saint-Denis on May 13, 1610, to give her greater legitimacy should she need to exercise a regency in his absence.

The following afternoon, Henry IV traveled by carriage to visit Sully, who was home with the flu, to discuss the final details of his expedition. As the journey was short, the king deemed it unnecessary to be escorted by the mounted guard and raised the curtains of his carriage to better observe the preparations for Marie de' Medici's solemn entry into Paris. François de Ravaillac, a fervent Catholic raised on hatred of Protestants, followed the royal carriage from its departure from the Louvre. As it was blocked on Rue de la Ferronnerie, he lunged forward and stabbed the king twice: the second blow was fatal. Henry IV died quickly.
