Silver Stained-Glass Strike - Notre-Dame de Paris
A new eternal tribute to the most beautiful of cathedrals!
For over six centuries, Notre-Dame de Paris has accompanied the History of France. From Saint Louis' departure on crusade to the Liberation of Paris, including Napoleon's coronation, it has watched over our country's destiny. It has endured wars, revolutions, looting, desecration, and fires, the most recent in 2019. But it is still here. Magnificent!
A numismatic gem that tells the story of Notre-Dame de Paris
1163: CONSTRUCTION
In a Paris undergoing rapid expansion, the Romanesque cathedral had become too small. Bishop Maurice de Sully decided to build an immense Gothic cathedral to replace it. Construction would take 200 years.
1804: NAPOLEON'S CORONATION
Appointed Emperor of the French by plebiscite, Napoleon crowned himself with gold at his coronation in Notre-Dame on December 2, 1804. He also crowned his wife Josephine, as seen in David's famous painting reproduced on this stained-glass strike.
1944: LIBERATION
At the Liberation of Paris, General de Gaulle went to Notre-Dame to attend the Te Deum dedicated to victory. However, the program was changed at the last moment, and a vibrant Magnificat was ultimately sung in his presence.
2024: REOPENING
The fire at Notre-Dame in April 2019 caused considerable damage, notably destroying the entire timber frame and Viollet-le-Duc's spire. After more than five years of work, the cathedral's reopening is scheduled for Sunday, December 8th!
The creation of any stained-glass strike requires a special technique mastered by only a few minting workshops. But for the first time, the rose window does not form a complete circle but an ellipse at the edge of the crown. This added complexity necessitated the invention of a special technique, developed specifically to celebrate the reopening of Notre-Dame!
On the reverse, discover the harmony of Gothic art.
On the reverse, the stained-glass motif extends magnificently into the solid Silver of the strike, minted in Proof quality. A brilliant tribute to Gothic art, of which Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the earliest and purest examples.
