The background includes a typical figure from his work, illustrating his technique. The entire design is surrounded by a Greek inscription reading " ΔΟΜΗΝΙΚΟΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ 1541-1614 " and " ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ ". On the left are the mint year and the artist's characteristic signature " Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος εποίει ". The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European Union.
