OBVERSE

The obverse of this coin features Luiz Vas de Camoes in profile, surrounded by waves and the sea. Symbols referencing his maritime adventures are numerous: his ruff and hair transform into waves, the sailboat on the horizon, the caravel to his right. This caravel is adorned with the Crosses of the Order of Christ, a symbol of the Portuguese nation, and an emblem made of a feather and a sword, evoking the sixteen years the author spent at sea and traveling in the East. His right eye, which he lost in a battle in Morocco at age 23, is closed.
