On the left of the coin is the portrait of Queen Beatrix, vertically is the inscription "Beatrix Koningin der Nederlanden" (Beatrix Queen of the Netherlands). On the right is the theologian Erasmus, or Erasmius, writing the essay "The Praise of Folly" written in 1509 and first published in 1511.
