First Minting in Tribute to the Euro in Silver-Plated Copper: "Ireland": Representation of the first commemorative 2 Euro coin from the Emerald Isle

Ireland's first 2 Euro commemorative gold coin was released on March 25, 2007, on the occasion of the joint issue by thirteen Eurozone countries celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. To this day, it remains Ireland's only 2 Euro commemorative coin.

The obverse of the Irish coin differs from those of the mintings from the twelve other member countries of the Monetary Union at the time by its inscriptions in Irish (Gaelic): "Conradh na Romhe / 50 bliain" ("Fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome") and "Eire 2007" ("Ireland 2007"). The motifs on its reverse depict the book of the Treaty of Rome, signed by the six founding states of the EEC, the predecessor of the EU, with the star-paved Capitol Square in the background, designed in the heart of the Italian capital by Michelangelo. 4.88 million copies of Ireland's first 2 Euro commemorative coin were minted. 40,000 coins were struck in Brilliant Uncirculated quality and only 10,000 in Proof quality.
