⁣⁢Volodymyr the Great was Grand Duke of Kiev (980-1015). During his reign, the rise of Kievan Rus' as a strong community and great power began, and all Eastern Slavic lands were united under Kiev's rule. In 988-989, Rus' was Christianized at his initiative.⁤⁣

⁣⁢By the end of the 10th century, the Kiev Detynets (citadel) wall system contained several gates. One gate was for passage to Podil, another towards Pechersk, and a third was for passage towards Saint Sophia Cathedral.⁤⁣
