OBVERSE
The inner part of the coin depicts a hand practicing tactile reading of an open book.
- Above the index finger, pointing to the vertical inscription LOUIS BRAILLE 1809-2009, two birds symbolize the freedom of knowledge. The issuing country's designation "RI" is at the top right, and the mint mark "R" is at the bottom right. Below the book, Braille's name is written in the alphabet he invented. At the very bottom are the initials "MCC" of the artist Maria Carmela Colanéri.
- The outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
