As early as 1962, the rustic swallow was elected national bird by the Naturalist Estonian Society. The animal has also become a national symbol and a sign of peaceful resistance in Estonia during the "singing revolution". Its long and forked tail is characteristic. The animal is considered very confident towards humans and is also called domestic swallow.
