The highest mountain in the world remained unknown to Western society until 1852, when surveyors discovered it during the establishment of the map of India. Identified as the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest has become a subject of interest during the golden age of mountaineering and subsequently. Before the British expedition of 1953, a dozen expeditions had failed on Mont Everest since 1921. The incredible triumph of the first ascent of Mont Everest was claimed by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, who reached the highest peak world on May 29, 1953.
